A 13 metres whale of lights to raise awareness on the Pelagos Sanctuary

From the 7th of December 2023 and for 3 months, a 13-meter installation depicting a whale of lights, named “Aurora” and created by the artist Thomas Monin, is going to light up the Rainier III Nautical Stadium on the Harbour of Monaco.

This exhibition, organized jointly by the Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement and the Rotary Club of Monaco and inaugurated by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco at the opening of the Monaco Christmas Market, has the purpose to raise public awareness on the importance of protecting marine mammals in the Pelagos Sanctuary.

The exhibition is accompanied by explanatory panels, available on the Quai Albert I in the heart of the Monaco Christmas Market, to give a complete picture and more information about the “Aurora” work, the Pelagos Sanctuary and the Rotary Club of Monaco. A panel is also dedicated to the youngest with a poster on marine mammals and an online escape game.

This initiative is part to the centenary celebrations of Prince Rainier III’s birth, and opens the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Pelagos Agreement, established in 1999 between France, Italy and Monaco, with the aim to create a Sanctuary for the protection of marine mammals and their habitats.
