PELAGOS PARTNERSHIP CHARTER

The Pelagos Partnership Charter was established during the IV Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement (October 19-21, 2009, Monaco) with the aim of creating a network between the Agreement and the Municipalities located in the area of the Sanctuary. On the occasion of the IX Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement (January 26-26, 2024, Nice), the Pelagos Partnership Charter hes been updated by the Parties of the Agreement in order to harmonize the procedure of subscription, validity, and evaluation of activities within the framework of the Pelagos Partnership Charter.

Coastal Municipalities and Unions of Municipalities whose territory is located within the Pelagos Sanctuary area, can sign the Pelagos Partnership Charter. The Charter is valid for 3 years, after which a renewal process is required.

The Pelagos Partnership Charter currently counts 91 signatory Municipalities in compliance with renewals.

The main objectives of the Pelagos Partnership Charter are:

  • creating a network among all the Municipalities in the Sanctuary;
  • making the Sanctuary more tangible to the public;
  • creating new synergies on issues related to marine mammals and their protection;
  • involving local partners to promote the objectives of the Agreement and implementing concrete actions in favor of marine mammals;
  • involving Municipalities in information and awareness activities.
