Monk Seal sighting at Capraia island in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park

We are pleased to share the news of the recent sighting of a specimen Monk Seal! This stunning animal was sighted in June 2023 in the Cave of Capraia Island and testifies an ascertained frequentation, over the past ten months, of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park (PNAT), which lies within the Pelagos Sanctuary area.

The monitoring action, undertaken by the Park, continues to give extraordinary results, as do the management and awareness-raising initiatives. The effectiveness of monitoring this species could be enhanced by similar initiatives in other areas of the Sanctuary, resulting in better knowledge of the seal’s occurrence in nearby areas.
